Roberto Rodriguez-Fall Night
I featured relatively new label Fina Records here last year with the wonderful 'So Long' by Freerotation resident and all round good guy, Leif. A subsequent released also followed in 2011 on the same label by Roberto Rodriguez and like so many releases nowadays passed me by. That was until Move D started dropping it in his sets. Anyway music is timeless. What's the rush?

Move D-Sandmann
Freerotation is now just a week away. Fortunately the green light is go for me and missus to attend. So over the next few days I'll be sharing some fine cuts from some of the artists in attendance. However, I'll probably just post anything. Best to start with resident and adopted Welshman for a weekend, Move D. This track is lifted from his debut album Kuntstoff released way back in 1995.

Good Guy Mikesh & Filburt-Gold Snake (Iron Curtis Remix)
I close the working week with a record I've been very fond of recently. New label The Exquisite Pain have already delivered plently in their short existence, with notable cuts from Alain Ho & Alex Arnout, Move D on a disco tip and this from Good Guy Mikesh & Filburt. Whilst the original hits all the right notes for a quality nu disco joint, Iron Curtis' remix takes it alot deeper. I played this at the last Soundwaves event, and it even turned up on Move D's Boiler Room visit (though it was omitted from the general tracklist that was banded about). Great minds etc...

Chris Simmonds-I Changed My Mind
Another house track that was given a new lease of life last year was Chris Simmonds' 2000 release 'I Changed My Mind'. Repressed on French label Robsoul, it didn't hang around quickly, especially when it found itself a cornerstone of Move D's sets over 2011.Speaking of his sets, Mr Moufang is the latest DJ to provide online bedwetters FACT with a mix. Give it a listen here.

Mood II Swing-Move Me
Firmly back to house music today with some classic Mood II Swing. A track I'd forgotten all about until it was featured in Move D's set at Panorama Bar last month. Way deep and darker than much of their work, more comparable to Basic Channel than some of their 90s US Vocal House output.

Freerotation 2011
Fortunately it's not all bad. Whilst many of the problems of festivals will perennially exist simply due to size and money; there's is just about enough to satisfy and entice; such as Field Day in London and the new Beacons Festival in Skipton, North Yorkshire. But there is one festival I experienced recently that is different to them all.
Just over a week ago, I was fortunate to attend a festival I had been looking forward to for months. Freerotation Electronic Audio VisualFestival takes place at Baskerville Hall just outside Hay-on-Wye on the Welsh and English Border nestled just inside the beautiful Brecon Beacons National Park. With less than 1000 attendees, where many of are members and attend yearly, it really is an intimate festival experience. With a lineup away from the focus of many 'celebrity' DJs, it's vibe really is that of a proper 3 day commuity party. When I arrived I quickly caught on this vibe, and really could wait to get involved.
Friday
Without everyone settling in for a long night ahead, the festival started off with subtly for the most part, people relaxing in the dome outside catching up with the friends they'd met from years before and many of the resident and guest DJ/Artists skirting around making everyone feel welcome as they gear up for their favourite party of the summer. With the night starting to fall and 'Alice Firefly' performing her fire show, people slowly began to pick up the pace and with the Dome tent only open till 11pm (mithering farmer apparently), many began to nestle inside in greater numbers.
I first got settled inside for local lad and resident Leif. His lovely set of deep sounds really set the scene for what lay ahead of us in Room 1 especially where he was quickly backed up by fellow resident Tom Demac who showcased a similarly deep sound with a slightly snappier edge.
After only ever catching him in his Pigon guise, I was more than a tad excited to catch Efdemin also in Room 1. He didn't disappoint with his trademark deep techy European beats flavoured with some big Chicago house sounds.Next was a quick jaunt to Room 2, which after well documented previous problems with heat was fitted with a least of couple fans to help control the sweat being brought on by and the sound of some seriously heavy techno.
In the unofficial 'Room 3' it quickly became apparent something was getting was setup. Shortly before 2am Move D stepped up to play his first set of the weekend. Even after several times of seeing Move D DJ, you only left with one guarantee, a first class set. Even though after too many reasonably priced beers from the bar, I still recall hearing some great cuts from the likes of Terje, M.K. and many more I couldn't put my finger on (and still can't, get on soundcloud and get them named if you can).Saturday
After a reasonably early night on the Friday, I was refreshed and ready for a prolonged day of music and sunshine for the Saturday. With the recently purchased Vestax having a first outing at the tent, and bacon and cider on the go, we were ready to head out to the dome to soak up the atmosphere and the rays.
First I caught a great live set from Tom Ellis (apparently he did it last year to great acclaim). Many of the attendees may have had little sleep (unlike me) but everybody was in great form and the sun was out in full force.
I've been wanting to see Jackmate for a while and his Saturday afternoon set in the dome did not disappoint. From dropping the mammoth 'Be Like the Sun', the crowd really came alive, getting much needed shelter from the blistering heat for some welcome respite of jacking house and techno.
Later on in a rare trip into Room 2 enabled me to catch Cosmin TRG, who with each release really does showcase his talents over several different 'genres' of electronic music from deep techno to future beats. His set was a bass heavy thump of deep dark dirty bass music, together with excellent touches of deep techno and house to accomodate it.
One of the more anticpated sets of the weekend was from Levon Vincent. He stayed glued to his decks throughout his set where he showcased a multitude of genres, only briefly looking up to survey the burgeoning and respondent crowd in Room 1. Chicago Skyway also didn't fail to disappoint, and following his excellent set and a full length promised, his visits to the UK may become much more frequent.
Sunday
This day came around far too quickly. After a bit of faffing (by me, no-one else), it was off to Hay for Sunday lunch (and to check out the record fair) to energise for one last very warm day of looking silly and of continued excellent music. For dress up day, I went as one of the tigers (£12 in primark, I knew I wouldnt be alone) and whilst fun it was, I was probably wearing the hottest thing ever to wear whilst dancing.
Unfortunately due a trip to Hay and getting ready, I missed about half of Move D's Sunday afternoon set (since listened to it via Soundcloud) but caught the last half hour or so and surely one the anthems of the weekend, Session Victim's 'Good Intentions' which he also played in his Friday set. XDB's set on Sunday afternoon at the Dome was also highly enjoyable which followed a relatively meandering set from Steve Tang.
After a few too many drinks (and a hefty Sunday lunch), I missed much of the evening's preceedings due to a quick knap (including Soulphiction-bit gutted but least caught a bit of Michael Baumann in seeing Jackmate's set).
After slipping out the tiger suit and to something more suitable, I rushed to catch Fred P who was playing the penulitmate set in Room 1. His set was bliss from start to finish, an exercise in deepness and restraint before exploding every now and then, finishing with a jaw-dropping track (I really cannot recall what exactly it was-but it was one of the highlights of the whole weekend-please if you were there-share!)
The weekend wouldn't have been complete without a live set from Steevio and Suzybee. Their epic closing set came complete with jaw dropping visuals and deep techno modulations via Steevio's huge Eurorack Modular.
This was by far the most wonderful festival I have ever attended. It was shame when it finally had to end. One look at the facebook page of the festival will quickly highlight the fondness everyone who attended has for the event and the fun that they had.
July 2012 really is far too far away.

Move D-Workshop 13
In the run up to Freerotation where he is a resident (now only 2 weeks away!), I thought it only right to share with you the latest Move D release and his latest output on German house and techno label, Workshop. After his excellent EP on Uzuri which included surely one of the house tracks of the year in 'Your Personal Healer' and his fantastic remix of Leif's So Long (both which were highlighted on here), we can only appreciate this man's hard work in giving us another selection of his tracks with that now signature Move D sound.
All three tracks have something for everyone; A1 swings from side to side with tidy vocal samples to create an upbeat disco edge; B1 is more reminiscent of other Workshop releases with a deep atmospheric synths and a tight tech kick; and finally B2 is some beautiful beatdown sounds which one could easily contrast to Irish wunderkid Space Dimension Controller. Cool videos's too!
Purchase this excellent summer release here.
Whilst this is the 13th release on Workshop, you can check an earlier Move D release on the label here.

Leif-So Long
More swedish house flavours for Walk into the Sea this time from Leif. New imprint Fina continues to impress with only it's second release (a third highly rated EP was released by Robert Rodriguez only last week) following a promising start from Australian deep house don Mic Newman. Proving that wasn't a flash in the pan, they've delivered once again with 3 deep heavy cuts and an outstanding and expected remix from Heidelberg deep master Move D. It moved pretty quickly, but I sincerely hope it's back in our stores soon as people need to get on it! Keep your eyes on the game with this label.

Freerotation Festival 2011
The initial line-up has been announced for this year's Freerotation Festival, once again taking place at Baskerville Hall in South Wales. A truly initimate festival which specialises in deep house, deep techno and bass music is a members only event, yet those members can invite new people to join and attend. Fortunately I've managed to wangle an invite for this year and have already prepared my body, ears and mind for a truly unforgettable experience. Some of the yearly regulars have been announced as residents this year and include Walk Into The Sea faves Move D and Soulphiction plus Shackleton, Tom Demac and more.
The guests include this year Fred P (Black Jazz Consortium), Levon Vincent, Efdemin, Sven Weisemann and Vince Watson for the house and techno heads, whilst for dubstep and bass music you can expect to catch Ramadanman, Peverelist and Ben UFO. More artists are set to be announced in the coming weeks and months.
Find out more at the official website here.
To celebrate this year's announcement, I thought I'd be nice and share some music from the artists to wet the appetite and convince you to somehow get an invite. Enjoy.

Move D-Hydrophonic EP
Not much posting, not much writing, but theres always time for tunes and especially for Move D.
Side 2 has been part of his sets for a while and it finally drops on vinyl/download from next Monday. Just how good this release is beyond description. A mutual friend who partied with him and Jus Ed at Freerotation last year says he's the nicest guy you could meet too. Always good to hear one of the good guys getting the exposure that their talent deserves.

Space Dimension Controller-Temporary Thrillz
Space Dimension Controller. I certainly wasn't one the ball with this guy. The ridicuously young man from Belfast had apparently throughout 2010 (and even in 2009) cemented his own unique sound within a burgeoning sub-genre of electronic music inconveniently labelled with a large question mark. Part deep house, funk, downbeat electronica and everything else, it wasn't a surprise to hear such variety after listening to his recent eclectic but excellent Resident Advisor podcast. I then realised I had guestlist to see him at the meandyou night at Soup Kitchen in Manchester last month but passed because I hadn't heard of him and I was 'tired'. Bugger. I should of known meandyou don't let you down (Move D next month!!). His excellent EP 'Temporary Thrillz' has been re-released this week and you can preview the release below. Pick it up from Piccadilly Records here.

Thomas Meinecke and Move D-Work
Work was one of the more curious house full length releases of 2009. Move D in conjunction with Thomas Meinecke goes all crunk house, interspersed with spoken word and lots of hip hop heavy samples. The album begins with a sample from Ice T's Warning which sets out to offend and establishes the tone for the rest of the record (dirty low slut tramp bitch hole!). Bit of a change from the deep soulful sets or melodic techno tracks that we're used to. The video above is the track Bounce (together with spoken word intro). Check out my album highlight below.
